The state was created in 1991. It shares boundaries with Edo to the north, Ondo to the north-west, Anambra to the east and Rivers to the south-east. The state has two district seasons, dry and rainy season. The state is open to other parts of the country by a good network of roads. The main activity of the state is agriculture. This employs the majority of the states inhabitants. The main crops are cocoa yams, yam, potatoes and cassava.

The state government has a variety of programmes within the agricultural sector to further attract investors to the state. Delta state is also a major producer of crude oil. Excellent opportunities exist for refinery related activities for companies seeking to operate in the area.

Delta State Energy & Water Resources

Energy Resources: The energy supply in the State is derived from local thermal power stations. The thermal power station using oil and gas is located at Ughelli. It has an installed capacity of 276 megawatts, while the Ogorode hydroelectric power station, located at Sapele, has an installed capacity of 1,020 megawatts.

Water Resources: The water resources of Delta State include both surface and underground water. The surface water has a large area cover age. For instance, about thirtyfive per cent of the 16,842 sq. km. land of Delta is riverine.
